Electoral Commission Announces Reforms to Improve Election Transparency

In a bid to enhance the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a series of reforms aimed at addressing challenges identified in previous elections. These reforms are designed to foster transparency, credibility, and public trust in the nation's elections.

INEC has developed 142 recommendations targeting various aspects of the electoral system. These recommendations encompass voter management, electoral operations, election technology, and legal frameworks. A key proposal includes expanding the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to accept computer-generated voter slips, aiming to streamline accreditation and reduce potential malpractices. Additionally, INEC seeks legal clarity on the use of electronic result transmission to enhance transparency and public trust in election outcomes.

As the 2027 general elections approach, political parties are intensifying their preparations. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is consolidating its position, while opposition parties are exploring alliances and new formations to challenge the incumbent. Notably, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai's recent defection from APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has added a new dynamic to the political landscape ahead of the elections.

In response to lessons learned from the 2023 elections, the Nigerian House of Representatives is moving to replace the 2022 Electoral Act with a new 2025 version. This legislative reform aims to address gaps identified in previous electoral processes and strengthen the legal framework governing elections. The House Committee on Electoral Matters emphasizes the importance of increased awareness among political parties, INEC officials, and civil society organizations regarding the dangers of vote-buying and other electoral malpractices.

These developments underscore Nigeria's commitment to electoral integrity and democratic consolidation. By implementing comprehensive reforms, enhancing legal frameworks, and fostering political engagement, the nation aims to conduct free, fair, and credible elections in 2027 and beyond.
